Spotlight on: PHLP – Pennsylvania Health Law Project

Who is PHLP?
The Pennsylvania Health Law Project (PHLP), headquartered in Philadelphia but with offices in Harrisburg and Pittsburgh, provides free legal services and advocacy to Pennsylvanians having trouble accessing publicly funded health care coverage or services.

How does PHLP help families of children and adolescents with serious mental illness?
PHLP’s website include good, up to date information about health care available to children in low income families: http://www.phlp.org/Website/Children/ChildrenMA.asp

As parents of children with serious mental illness, we want treatment that will be most effective, that will help our children manage their behaviors, and that will allow them to live life to the fullest. Those treatments more often than not are to be found in the PUBLIC HEALTH system, and are available to all of our children regardless of family income. Treatments like family-based therapy, WRAP programs and services for transition age youth. How do we access these services? See PHLP’s brochure Getting Medical Assistance for a Child with a Severe Disability, Mental Illness or Behavioral Disorder Under the “Loophole.”
