NEW Bucks County Family to Family Classes

Bucks County announces its fall class schedule. For the first time, due to popular demand, there will be a Family to Family class in the upper Bucks area. There is no cost to take the classes, however registration IS REQUIRED.

Family-to-Family is a series of 12 weekly classes, one evening per week, structured to help family members understand and support a relative diagnosed with a serious mental illness while maintaining their own wellbeing. The course is taught by trained volunteer family members who know what it’s like to have a loved-one with a serious mental illness. F2F is offered as a community service free of charge. REGISTRATION is REQUIRED

The NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program is a free 12-week course for families and caregivers of individuals with mental illness. Trained family members teach the course. All instruction and course materials are free to class participants. The Family-to-Family curriculum focuses on diagnosis, medications, brain function, and communication skills for disorders such as Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Major Depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Borderline Personality Disorder. Family-to-Family classes are offered in hundreds of communities across the country as well as in Canada and Mexico.

Pennsylvania Community on Transition Conference

The vision of the PA Community on Transition is that all Pennsylvania youth and young adults with disabilities will successfully transition to the role of productive, participating, adult citizens. Youth will be empowered to recognize their talents, strengths and voice and have equal access to resources that promote full participation in the communities of their choice.

The PA Community on Transition is holding a conference: Empowerment in Action: A Unified Approach on July 21 - 23, 2010 at the Penn Stater Conference Center and Hotel, 215 Innovation Boulevard, State College, PA 16803

Conference Overview
The primary purpose of this conference is to expand the capacity of schools and communities, in partnership with youth, young adults and families, in promoting the successful transition of youth/young adults with disabilities to post-school outcomes of employment, post-secondary education and training, community participation and healthy lifestyles. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about effective practices to assist youth/young adults with disabilities in achieving successful post-school outcomes.

Mental Health Assn of PA Children’s News Launches New Website

What is Children’s News?
Children’s News is a program of the Mental Health Association in Pennsylvania (MHAPA) and its affiliates across the state.

How does Children’s News help families of children and adolescents with serious mental illness?
Children’s News provides information for families on children’s mental health issues in Pennsylvania – including advocacy efforts, events, and policies – and offers families the opportunity to share information on these issues. The website lists many resources, including a dynamic Roadmap to Help which offers tips and key contacts for families navigating mental health issues and systems.

Spotlight on: PHLP – Pennsylvania Health Law Project

Who is PHLP?
The Pennsylvania Health Law Project (PHLP), headquartered in Philadelphia but with offices in Harrisburg and Pittsburgh, provides free legal services and advocacy to Pennsylvanians having trouble accessing publicly funded health care coverage or services.

How does PHLP help families of children and adolescents with serious mental illness?

As parents of children with serious mental illness, we want treatment that will be most effective, that will help our children manage their behaviors, and that will allow them to live life to the fullest. Those treatments more often than not are to be found in the PUBLIC HEALTH system, and are available to all of our children regardless of family income. Treatments like family-based therapy, WRAP programs and services for transition age youth. How do we access these services? Who is NAMI Mainline?
30 minutes to the southeast of our Glenside office, our sister affiliate NAMI Mainline serves individuals and families along the Mainline in Montgomery, Delaware and Chester Counties. A strong and active affiliate, NAMI Mainline offers “Ask the Expert” Forums, a weekly Physical Activity Group, a biweekly friendship group for adults with mental illness, Family-to-Family Education Program and other programs and services.
